CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, as part of a larger multi-task Effects of Defects project to establish NDE techniques for detecting damage levels in ceramic-composite armor, 84 specially made ceramic-composite armor test panels have been produced. Several forms of ultrasonic testing have been used: Immersion phased-array, immersion single-focused transducers, and air-coupled systems.

The amplitude data was especially useful to detect surface or near surface inclusions introduced into the tile. However, the amplitude data can detect the presence of inclusions or voids into the tiles but cannot determine their depth. For the depth determination of a defect present in the tile the ToF data can be used. Pressing 7 Ultrasonic Results Pressing 7 tiles have graphite sphere inclusions supplied by Superior Graphite. 8mm. Table 1 gives the details for each of the Pressing 7 tiles. 3mm graphite sphere inclusions have been introduced into the tile.
